Back in the land Spring forgot...

So after 5 days in Spring... the snow is horrible! We returned to Juneau last night and after leaving 65 degree sunshine, the 23 degree cold was bad.

I still know nothing and that is beyond frustrating. Here are some pictures... be sure to check out my photoblog http://melnell99.photoblog.com/, I am doing okay with the 365 challange so far.

Still no answers

So after a painful EMG test. http://www.medicinenet.com/electromyogram/article.htm We still no nothing. I see the final doctor tomorrow at 11:30.

On a fun note we have been having a blast exploring Seattle. JT had fun at the Science center and he built a bear tonight. We are off to the hotel for packing and pizza. Tomorrow a friend (Shari) is picking us up and we are going to lunch, then shopping, and then to the airport.

See you all soon.

Medical update:
I am less 9 tubes of blood and have to have an EMG tomorrow. No one
knows what is wrong. Hopefully we will have answers soon.

On a fun note we have been to the Aquarium and taken a harbor cruise.

Test a cool feature!

So there is a feature to this site which allows you to email a post to the site.  So I thought I would test it before I go South.

What the heck is wrong with me...

I know I said I would touch on my medical issues… so here goes.

In 2002 I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called Sjogren’s syndrome. Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that affects about 1 in 500 people. Middle-aged women are more predominantly affected than men, comprising about 90% of those affected. The most common symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome are excessively dry eyes and mouth due to lower tear and saliva production.

Other symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome occur in varying degrees. These can include arthritis, pain in the muscles and nerves, low thyroid function or a swollen thyroid gland, and increased pain or swelling in the lymph nodes. Those affected may also suffer from fatigue and sleep deprivation.

In autoimmune disorders, the body fails to recognize normal body functions and chemical productions. In Sjogren's, the body’s white cells attack and fight the natural processes of tear and saliva production. Dry eyes may result in redness, burning, and itching. Dry mouth can increase dental cavities, create very sore throats, and in more severe cases can cause difficulty in speaking or in swallowing. Sense of taste may also be reduced.

As with most autoimmune disorders, Sjogren's syndrome has no cure, but there are treatments that can help allay the effects. For dry eyes, the most common method of treatment is artificial tear eye drops. Particular care should be taken to use these in dry air environments, such as on airplanes or in offices that use air conditioning. When artificial tears do not sufficiently address the problem, surgery is occasionally attempted to slow the destruction of the tear producing glands.

Good oral hygiene is essential. Regular dental cleanings are a must, and toothpastes should contain low levels of peroxide. Reducing intake of liquids that deplete the body of moisture, such as sodas with caffeine or coffee, can also help. In addition, the use of medications that cause dry mouth may need to be evaluated for risk versus benefits.

When other painful symptoms present, anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium may be prescribed to alleviate pain. If the disease is seriously affecting the organs of the body, physicians may prescribe steroids to decrease both pain and possible infection. Sjogren's syndrome patients are also observed for lymphatic cancer, as it tends to occur in about 5% of those affected.

So that brings us to current… well some nerve and muscle things are going on now, thus the trip with JT to Seattle. I will update while down there if I can…

Again with the snow!

So we finaly broke the all-time snow record for Juneau. 194.79 inches is where we are at I believe. It is amazing. Sunday it was sunny and warm so the kids and I played in the snow. We made a "Snow-girl" and covered each other in snow. It was fun!

JT and I leave this Sunday for Seattle. I have medical appointments, but we will have time for fun. This will be some good bonding time for us, as he is growing up so fast.

Anyway... I will try to add some while away, if not I will update on my return.

Making a virtual mark

So this blogging this is pretty fun. I get to put my opinion out there and even if it goes unread I have made my mark. This got me thinking about other people and some other blogs I have been to...

Blogs of Friends & Family:
http://www.nellfamily.com/joseph/blog/ - This is my hubbies... a bit outdated... That is what I fear will happen to this one.

http://www.mindwheat.com/ - I guess you would call this a group blog?

http://blog.arlomidgett.com/ - This blog is great... lots of information and fun to read.

http://half-century.blogspot.com/ - This is where I got my idea to blog... this is a friends blog who is writing a book!

https://uascentral.uas.alaska.edu/online/portfolio/JNMMM?term=Spring-2007&behavior=UAS&session=2273655& - Fun and keeping busy.

https://uascentral.uas.alaska.edu/online/portfolio/JNCRN1/MyJourney?term=Spring-2007&behavior=UAS&session=2273655& - A blog can be a way to get though hard times.

http://uashome.alaska.edu/~jncjb/blog/ - Can never have too many blogs!!!

Now I think what makea a great blog is that it is readable. It could have links to other sites, pitcures... and stories that make you laugh... or cry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog - Wikipedia has a lot to say on this topic.

However, there are some out there that do nothing but offend, or anger... but I guess this is the way some make there mark... to bad it is black.

Will it be years till my weekends are restful?

This last weekend just about killed me... Let's see here was the proposed schedule:

Schedule for Saturday March 10th
9-10 - Ballet
10-noon - Church activity
2-3 - Police Station tour
3:45 - Picked up at house by Heather
4-5 - Dinner with Heather & Hannah
5-6:30 - @ bowling alley for a girl scout flag ceremony
6:30-7ish - Desert with Hannah & Heather
7:30-??? - Beauty & the Beast

Schedule for Sunday March 11th
9-noon - Church
1-3 - Clean house
3 - Bed time - hang with kids

We did every thing but the Saturday Church activity. It was a busy weekend and I am tired. Plus with the Daylight Savings we all lost an hour. So I have come to realize it will be quite some time until I get a weekend to rest… not do anything.

But after looking at the pictures…I guess I can wait.

Am I really that OLD?

I am now the mother of a 6 year old. AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

We had Hannah's birthday party at Our Back Yard this year on Saturday, March 3rd. She invited kids from her class and from Daisy Scouts. This years theme was Princess, and Emily made a Barbie cake (I was going to put that Em and I made the cake... but we know that wasn't true). I did however make Hannah's dress... and have now been told that I need to start making her dresses that are "in Fashion."

About 18 or so kids showed up and there was pizza and cupcakes. It was a ton of fun... even if mom didn't get to sit down at all... Hannah received a great assortment of gifts, from tickets to Beauty & the Beast to cheerleading barbies. Even Hannah and JT got along well at the party... and lets hope that lasts!!! Everything went well and now she wants to start planning her next birthday ("at Disneyland please mom") BAH.

Snow...snow...wait...more snow

So when last I posted there was a blizzard warning. Well 4 days and 22 inches later here we are... The picture is of our house today... just a bit of snow. The whole city closed down, city, state, UAS, and federal... and guess what... yup I have to work.

Oh well. On a side note, I have to go south for medical issues again... I will write more on that later. I will also add a post about Hannah's Birthday this weekend... it was FUN!!

Scary Lion

It is a cold and snowy day... hmmm sounds like a good start to a cheap thriller book. Woke up this morning and the weather man said we were in a blizzard warning. WONDERFUL! We could get 18-24 inches by tomorrow... I know I have said it in the past but I have decided that I don't like winter as much as I used too.

I remember as a kid in school making a scary lion on March 1st for the whole "In like a lion out like a lamb" thing. Today was a scary lion of a day.

At lunch I couldn't see across the street as the wind and snow we so bad.

We will see what tomorrow brings.
